Tea with Your Higher Self (A Simple Journaling Practice)


In the last email, I shared that visualizing an ideal future self can set us up to expect a higher self connection that brings fireworks and perfection. Which usually isn't how it shows up.

The only kind way to use a future self practice is to imagine a future self who is a lot like you but maybe a few steps ahead on the journey - not on another timeline altogether. A mentor of mine - Jacqueline Gates - calls this your next future self (as opposed to the ultimate one).

So what’s an everyday, embodied way to connect with your higher self? I’m suggesting a cozy tea and journaling practice because it invites you to come as you are, but still supports you as you open the door to connection.

Here’s a ritual you might try…

  1. Prepare a cup of tea that feels comforting to you. Hold the warmth in your hands as you take the first sip.
  2. Breathe into your body, slow and easy, so that you can be fully present in this moment.
  3. Open your journal and set a clear intention: “I want to talk to my higher self.”
  4. Begin the conversation in writing. You might start with something like… “Dear Higher Self, here’s what I’m feeling…”
  5. Write without censoring yourself. Let your inner knowing speak. Even if you begin with fears or doubts, I bet you won’t stay there. Pause to give your heart time to hear your higher self’s truth.
  6. Close with what you are taking away from the talk, and say thank you.

Remember, there’s no right way — only your way.
